Photography : One Year With Film Only
THE PROJECT :
From the 1st of July 2016 until 1st of July 2017 I will only shoot film!
Why Shooting Film Only ?
Since I entered the world of (digital) photography in 2013, I’ve accomplished multiple achievements, been awarded several times and took thousands of pictures. But like in every relationship, there are up and down and since few months I’ve been feeling like I was turning in circle or not progressing anymore.
After wandering on Youtube and the internet I ended up looking at film photography. I quickly came to the conclusion that was what I was looking for to become a better photographer and revive my interest.
I first bought a medium format Mamiya and after shooting one roll, I was literally blown away by the quality of the image and also the depth (almost 3D effect) given by film. Also as I took more time thinking each frame before pressing the shutter, I ended up with 7 keepers out of the 15 frames I can shot per roll. It corresponds to a 46% success rate! When shooting digital, I’d consider myself happy with a 10% rate of keepers.
From this first success grew the idea of this project but I had to take a radical decision to make it work : GET RID OF ALL MY DIGITAL EQUIPMENT. Yes, that’s what I did! I got rid of my loyal Canon 6D, my beloved Fuji X100T and a bunch of lenses. In exchange, I got a Leica M6 and few lenses.
So far, I must admit that I’m really wondering what happened in my head when I decided to sell all my gear, hardly acquired over the last years but I’ll know soon enough it was mistake or not!
