WHAT IS THE FILM DATING?
"What film should I use?" Was probably one of my first question as a beginner film photographer. Between colour, B&W or creative films, there are over 130 references to choose from between 35mm and medium format.
Even if the final result is also determined by the settings, equipment, developing and scanning method you choose, the film stock has the first role when it comes to the look and feel of your image.
Films are sensible creatures with different tastes. Some are more suited for Landscape, Portrait, Concert, Street, etc… so a little planning will be a great advantage for the success of your first film date!
The Film Dating is a film stock comparison tool that helps beginners and curious analog photographers discovering the perfect film for every situation.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The first thing to decide is the camera format you are planning to use: 135 or 120? Next, we’ll ask you to choose between Colour, B&W or Creative film. Then think about the type of light you will be shooting: Will it be sunny, mixed light or dark?
After that will appear the first series of images where you’ll have to pick at least 5 favorites. Don’t judge them based on their subject or composition. Instead, it’s important to focus your attention on the aesthetics (saturation, contrast, grain etc…) Are you more for a vintage-retro look or sharp and vivid colours?
Once you are done, move on to the 2nd series of images and select another 5 images to discover the best film for you!
Enjoy and hope you’ll find your film soulmate!
